Deletebtw: White is not an ethnic category. It’s not even a culture. A White Mainer has nothing in common with a White New Mexican. Neither have anything in common with a White Oregonian. Not Food, not clothing, not history, not music, unless it’s black music.
The Irish weren’t White: 19th and early 20th century signs on the East Coast read “No Irish Need Apply.” They were portrayed as Neanderthals in cartoons. The Italians weren’t White. They were lynched. “Garlic smelling Pope worshippers.”
The Irish, the Germans, the Poles, the Greeks, the Italians, the were only accepted as White in the North due to the Great Migration when black folks were pouring in fleeing murderous terrorism in the South.
Whiteness is only a category of social power. If you are allowed to wield power and negotiate with power, you’re White. Doesn’t matter what ethnicity you are.
